Data Warehousing and Business Inteligence

  • A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-based collection of data that supports the management decision-making process.

    WBS-IT develops data warehouses that can be used to analyze a particular subject area. Sales, finance and operations are examples. The data warehouse integrates data from multiple company sources. For example, two sources may have different ways of identifying a product, but in a data warehouse, there will be only a single way of identifying a product.

    Historical data is typically kept in a data warehouse for various time periods from three months, six months, 12 months or even longer. Once data is in the data warehouse, it will not change. So, historical data in a data warehouse should never be altered. WBS-IT integrates these data warehousing concepts into best practices for decision making.

    Business intelligence is commonly associated with data warehousing because many of the tool vendors position their products as business intelligence software rather than data warehousing software. There are other occasions where the two terms are used interchangeably.
